"If running a business was easy – everybody would do it.
Every business venture needs an entrepreneurial idea, tons of motivation and the courage to enlist other specialists to ensure success.
Businesses call on me to keep them tax compliant but the real fun starts when my clients are learning something new from me and when we share our knowledge. Then we both know success is going to happen.
Being a Chartered Accountant ensures I have the number-crunching skills to analyse the facts and figures. Foster & Co. is part of the Chartered Accountant peer review process that covers New Zealand and Australia and we think that's an essential element of delivery trustworthy services to clients.
But it's not enough these days for accountants to deliver the end-of-year figures and send clients away with little more than a handful of financial reports that they don't understand.
Some things just can't be learnt from books and with business experience that comes from years in the accounting profession – there is plenty of practical advice I enjoy sharing with clients.
Whether I'm working on a motor mechanic's business or an investor's high-flying property portfolio, the starting point is always about establishing solid foundations.
Ongoing support, practical guidance and good connections within SME networks help me deliver the broad service demanded by today's successful business people.
Then we can work on the entrepreneur achieving their own business goals.
And, what would I be doing if I wasn't helping people build successful businesses? I'm a bit of a petrol head and I would be restoring classic cars – just for the fun of it."
